Mechanical Engineering is perhaps the broadest and most diverse of the engineering disciplines, playing a central role in many areas from the automotive and aerospace industries to biotechnology, computers, electronics, mico-electro-mechanical systems, energy conversion, environmental control, automation, and manufacturing.

The Mechanical Engineering Faculty carry out advanced research in experimental and theoretical fluid mechanics and aerodynamics, materials processing and solid mechanics, advanced materials, nanofabrication, and biomechanics. Students benefit through the opportunity to work in these labs with internationally known mentors.

Mechanical engineers create the physical systems and devices that define modern society — everything from automobiles to air conditioning, robotic parts to power plants, people movers to artificial limbs, and rocket engines to satellites. At the School of Engineering, we groom our students to become the inventors and innovators of tomorrow. Our Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering program offers a balanced curriculum that emphasizes the principles behind these designs and approaches. To apply these principles in the field, we make computational and research experience an integral component of your studies.

We also offer you the freedom to choose from 5 distinct areas of specialization: aerospace engineering, controls, and dynamic systems, fluid dynamics and thermal systems, materials engineering, mechanics and structural systems The high faculty-to-student ratio of our program ensures you develop close ties to your instructors and fellow students. This fosters lifelong relationships and a rigorous intellectual community of scholars. Many of our graduates enter such fields as computer engineering, nanotechnology, software development, and financial engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers advanced instruction and research opportunities in a variety of areas of current interest in mechanical engineering. We offer a full range of degree programs, from an undergraduate program leading to the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree, to graduate programs leading to the Master of Science (M.S.), Doctor of Engineering Science (Eng.Sc.D.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.

The department is home to such diverse research activities as biomechanics, mechanics of materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, control and robotics, manufacturing, energy systems, MEMS, and nanotechnology

In addition to undergraduate programs in mechanical engineering, the Department of Mechanical Engineering offers graduate programs leading to the degree of Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These programs are flexible, with a choice from among many concentrations, and with a sufficient number of elective courses to allow each student to concentrate in his or her area of interest. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission to the department.

Founded as a school dedicated to the instruction of mechanical engineers, Stevens has over 140 years of experience providing a broad range of theoretical and applied mechanical engineering learning opportunities. Graduate students benefit from an emphasis on multi-disciplinary research collaboration and interdisciplinary studies, including Nanotechnology and Sustainable Engineering. Broad faculty interests include high-performance materials, manufacturing and design, computational fluid dynamics, multiscale fluid physics, ambient energy harvesting, sustainable energy systems, multi-scale robotics and unmanned vehicles, and active nanomaterials and devices.

Mechanical engineers design the physical systems in today's world. At Stevens, the doctoral degree program in mechanical engineering focuses on the discovery of new innovations in technology. Students enrolled in the program work with faculty who are pioneers in the field. Together they conduct cutting-edge research, such as developing the latest innovations in robotics, nanomaterials and sustainable energy systems.

The Mechanical & Industrial Engineering department has been an integral part of the development of NJIT as a public research university. Graduate students have the opportunity to work with faculty on research in state-of-the-art multidisciplinary research centers in such emerging areas as engineered particulates, polymer engineering, microelectronics, and nanotechnology. The department has well-established relationships with business and government, and graduate students had opportunities for research internships and fellowships at agencies like NASA and Sandia National Laboratories, as well as with corporate partners.

Current faculty research areas include biological systems, computational modeling of complex physical systems, continuum mechanics, design, synthesis and demanufacturing, energetic materials, environmental engineering, fluids, image processing, kinematics and dynamics, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), micro-fluidics, multi-phase flows, nonequilibrium thermodynamics, nanotechnology, nontraditional machining, particulate technologies, plastics, rheology, robotics and system integration, tribology and vibrations of structures.
